My Most Magnificent Miss USA List #31
The Miss USA Beauty Contest was held for the first time in 1952 and has been staged annually ever since. The 60th official Miss USA (there have been more Miss USAs due to a dethronement and several Miss Universe winners) will be crown on June 19 in Las Vegas, Nevada. During the last 60 years the contest has launched the careers of some of the some very well known women, like Halle Berry. The Miss USA Pageant is run by the Miss Universe Organization which is owned by Donald Trump. One of Miss USA’s main duties is to represent her country at the Miss Universe Pageant. 7 Miss USA’s have gone on to win the Miss Universe crown.
While I believe each winner was very beautiful, special, and unique in her own way, we do still have our own personal taste. I am not making this list to insult any of the winners – many people might disagree with my choices. These are my personal opinions and I ranked them based on several factors including beauty, charm, performance during the Miss USA, Universe Pageants, reign, and overall impression. Let’s celebrate the build-up to the crowning of the 60th Miss USA!

31: 1983 – Julie Hayek (California)

Knoxville, Tennessee hosted the 32nd Miss USA Pageant in May 1983. The final was beamed live all over the USA and around the world on May 21, 1983. Of the 51 delegates, 12 lucky ladies survived the first cut and got to compete in the interview, swimsuit, and evening gown segments. The final five were the ladies from California, Louisiana (4th), North Dakota (5th), South Carolina (3rd), and Texas (2nd). 22 year old Julie Hayek, a 5 ft 10 beauty became her state’s fourth Miss USA titleholder.

A few weeks later she traveled to St. Louis, Missouri to compete against girls from all around the world for the 1983 Miss Universe title. Julie did very well and won the preliminaries. On the final night, she won the swimsuit and evening gown competitions, and finished fifth in the interview competition. The pageant was won by Miss New Zealand. Julie Hayek from the United States finished second in that competition. Hayek became an actress after her reign.

My thoughts about Miss USA 1983:

Delegates I noticed at first: Washington, Texas, South Carolina, and Nevada.
Interview competition:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_KtxNzMhWg
Georgia looked older than she was supposed to be and wore too much makeup. Her interview was quite akward. Washington was not very bubbly at all. California was confident and charming. North Dakota was a bit stiff at first but loosened up. Michigan had an endearing interview – seemed like a sweet girl. Texas was humorous, confident, and serious.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_Vv38ocA9M
South Carolina did not show much personality in her interview. Nevada seemed very nervous but sweet – David Copperfield’s assistant!!! Oklahoma seemed like a nice, mature girl. New York had a bubbly personality and seemed relaxed. Louisiana had a nice, relaxed interview. Pennsylvania seemed quite sweet and innocent.
Swimsuit Competition:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-q5nhoJad5k
Excellent: California, Texas, South Carolina
Good: Michigan, Oklahoma, Nevada, Louisiana
Average: Georgia, Washington, North Dakota, New York, Pennsylvania
Evening Gown Competition:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZV7Hi0i8kM
Georgia walked really fast and looked like a cotton ball. Washington’s dress was nothing special and walked gradually slower – akward. California won it for me at this point - ultra glam and sexy. North Dakota: top of the dress was nice but the bottom not but it was nice and flowy.
Michigan had a hideous dress. Texas: elegant and classy. South Carolina: Sexy but walked too fast. Nevada: simple, but powerful gown – underscored.
Oklahoma looked lovely. New York’s dress was too short and she looked uncomfortable and totally out of place. The dress and the setting did not seem to suit her. Louisiana looked nice. Pennsylvania looked like she was competing at Miss Teen USA.
Top 5:

Louisiana answered her question well but she was not that pretty. Texas had an interesting answer that could have divided the judges. South Carolina gave a great answer – it was unique and delivered with conviction. California’s answer was good but not spectacular. North Dakota had a great answer but she seemed hesitant.

32: 1961 – Sharon Brown (Louisiana)

The 10th anniversary of the Miss USA Pageant took place in Miami, Florida on July 13, 1961. 43 delegates competed for the new rhinestone tiara. Only 15 lucky ladies were selected to compete for that crown on the final night. Miss Louisiana, Sharon Brown, won the Miss Photogenic award. Five delegates were selected to compete for the crown: they were Misses Alabama, California, Louisiana, Nevada, and New York.

18 year old Sharon Brown from Louisiana became the 10th Miss USA. She was Louisiana’s second Miss USA. She was the first delegate to obtain both the Miss Photogenic and Miss USA titles. To celebrate the achievement of the state’s second crown, her hometown Minden, Louisiana declared July 25, 1961 Sharon Brown Day.

On July 15 she stepped on stage again to compete for the Miss Universe title and the hope of a back to back victory for her country. She was called into the top 15 before advancing to the top 5. The pageant was won by Miss Germany. Sharon Brown finished as 4th runner-up.

33: 1955 – Carlene King Johnson (Vermont)

On July 20, 1955 43 beauties took to the stage in Long Beach, California to compete for the 4th Miss USA title. 15 delegates were selected to be in the running for the crown. After that the top five were announced. They were the delegates from Arkansas, California, Georgia, Nebraska, and Vermont. The judges then deliberated to make their final choices. Georgia was called as the fourth runner-up. California was the third runner-up. Nebraska was the second runner-up. The delegates from Arkansas and Vermont were left standing. It was then announced that Arkansas was the runner-up. 22 year old Carlene King Johnson from Rutland, Vermont was the new Miss USA. She was crowned by the reigning Miss USA/Miss Universe, Miriam Stevenson.

Two days later she was on stage again to try and win a back to back Miss Universe crown for her country. Johnson was one of the top 15 delegates but she did not advance to the top 5. The contest was won by Miss Sweden. To date Johnson remains her state’s only Miss USA titleholder.

Sadly Carlene King Johnson died very young at the age of 35 in 1968 due to complications of diabetes.

Uruguay’s new queens
Fernanda Semino (18) was selected to represent Uruguay at Miss Universe 2011 in Sao Paulo, Brazil on September 12. She stands 1.68m tall. At the same event 1.70 m tall Belen Sogliano (18) was selected to be her country’s representative at Miss World 2011 on November 6 in London.

I prefer the girl that is going to Miss World even though both are too short. The Miss World girl reminds me of the glamorous South American Queens of the 80s and 90s!
Tanzania’s hope for Miss Universe selected

Nelly Kamwelu (18) won the Vodacom Miss Universe Tanzania Pageant last night. She will represent her country at Miss Universe 2011 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The runner-up is Neema Kilango who will compete at the 11th Miss Earth Pageant in Pattaya, Thailand on November 12. Yacoba Assenga is the second runner-up and will compete at Miss International 2011 in Chengdu, China.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
